WHAT MAKES ME SO SPECIAL?

There are two instances I would like to tell you about. Two instances that brought me to the title of my sermon today,
the first is what a change I have seen in the way people treat me and sometimes act around me ever since I became an
ordained minister and ever since I received my wheelchair. People that would not speak to me before now do and some of
those who did don’t especially if I wear my clergy shirt. The respect, kindness, and courtesy I receive to say the least is
sometimes mind boggling. People will stop their cars in the middle of the road just to let me cross; thugs will open and
hold doors for me, and others seem to think I am someone they should follow.

“What makes me so special?”

The second instance is; I was sitting out by the lake all week last week and there is this planter pot that I sit by; it is
pretty big about 36” in diameter. The only reason I mention the pot is when I looked down at it there where these two
bugs, what kind I do not know they kind of look like a mix between a crab and a spider, but anyway they both where
going around and around this pot just as fast as they could go. Now I’m not just talking about a few minutes of the time I
was sitting out there, no this was everyday all day last week. I don’t know if the bigger one was chasing the smaller one
or they just could not find the end of the pot, but it got me to thinking about Israel and their forty year trek through the
wilderness, and I began to put Israel, the bugs and myself in the same boat and that’s when I thought “What makes me
so special?” What makes me any different from these two bugs going around and around seemingly going forward but
going nowhere?

“What makes me so special?”

Now all of this has not gone to my head, I use the word me only to personalize the question, and I want you to take the
word me and use it personally for yourself; make what God does personal, see everything that happens in your life a
personal touch from God your Father.

“What makes me so special?”

Israel was special to God, they were His chosen people; yet they wondered around the wilderness for forty years even
though they were the apple of His eye. Was Israel special because they were such a great nation? No! Was Israel special
because they kept the letter of the law? No! Israel was special because God loved them and He was going to keep His
word, which by the way is very important to God, He was going to keep His promise and covenant He had made with their
fathers.
When I Hear what God says.
When I Believe what God says.
When I Do what God says.
I can Have what God says!

Luke 24:46-49 (New King James Version)
46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead
the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at
Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in
the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

In considering the need for all mankind to be saved and what is involved, I was thinking about the great numbers of
people claimed by many large churches that are supposedly being saved in their services.  I have heard people asked,
“Have you received Christ?”  Or, “Do you want Christ in your heart?”  It is vital to do these things to be saved, of
course.  But what do they mean?  Is it just a question of saying out loud, “Christ I receive you” or, “Jesus, I want you in
my heart”?  Are we done at that point?  I think not.  It is just a bit more involved than this.

The thief that was saved on the cross next to Jesus at the crucifixion did not appear to have to go through too much.
Yet, Jesus assured him he would be in paradise with Him.  The thief did not use any words demonstrating he would
receive Christ or accept Him into his heart.  What he did use, however, showed this is precisely what he did.  Therefore,
it is not the words one uses but the internal changes one makes that matters.     I believe it is productive to go to the
Source and find it what God says about it in His Word, the Bible.  There is much said about it.  I think it is more
productive to focus on what the Savior, Himself, says about things when speaking of salvation.  It is appropriate, I think.

When Jesus came back from the dead after rising on the third day He appeared in Person to many people.  Among them
were the apostles.  He took the time and effort to give them specific observations, declarations and instructions before
He left to go to the Father in Heaven.  One of them was the opening passage above.  It is important to realize this is a
conversation that occurred after He had died, been buried and rose again.  It is a conversation that occurred before the
ascension when He left to take His rightful place at the right hand of the Father.  It is before the Holy Spirit was sent to
mankind at Pentecost.  It is a very critical time that sets in place the age we are in now.  It is the plan now in effect as a
result of the mystery of God’s will and purpose for mankind.  It is critical and vital to consider the significance in setting
up everything from that moment on.  It is the concise overview, clarification and delineation of the foundation of the
Gospel and the New Testament.  It is crucial.
